Computer Assisted Genealogy Group of Northern Illinois (CAGGNI)

Objectives of the group:

  • Assisting members in their genealogical research and using computers in this endeavor.
  • Keeping members informed on new technologies and techniques to support their research.
  • Providing genealogical and computer mentoring for its membership.
  • Undertaking projects that support the genealogical community in the region.

The group has five Special Interest Groups (SIGs). These meet several times a year, usually on Saturdays, at the Schaumburg Township District Library. They are for those interested in more in-depth learning about software or other genealogy topics. Please see the events calendar for dates and times for these SIGs:

Chicago Jewish Historical Society

The Chicago Jewish Historical Society was founded in 1977, and is in part an outgrowth of local Jewish participation in the American Bicentennial Celebration of 1976. The Society has as its purpose the discovery, preservation and dissemination of information concerning the Jewish experience in the Chicago area.


North Suburban Genealogical Association

This group's goals are to promote an interest in genealogy, to instruct their members in careful, documented research and to publish genealogical and historical information in a newsletter six times a year. They have many meetings throughout the year, both on Zoom and in various libraries in the near northern suburbs. Non-members are welcome to attend their meetings. 


Northwest Suburban Genealogy Society

The Northwest Suburban Genealogy Society (NWSGS) is located in Mount Prospect and focuses on the family history and genealogy interests of its members. The group promotes the study of genealogy and history, conducts programs and workshops, works with local libraries and other institutions to increase and preserve genealogical and historical materials, and assists members in the study of family history. They have monthly meetings and newsletters. Many of the resources on their website are restricted to members, but guests are welcome at their meetings. 



Lake County IL Genealogical Society

The Lake County Illinois Genealogical Society seeks to unite people interested in the pursuit and study of genealogy and family history; to encourage the preservation of public and private records; and to promote programs of education which support the growth and development of these fields. They have monthly meetings in Vernon Hills.



Kane County Genealogical Society

The Kane County Genealogical Society is based in Elburn, Illinois in association with The Lawrence J Martin Heritage Center at the Town and Country Public Library. It works to bring resources and information services to those interested in learning more about their family history. One of this group's special projects is a Master Every Name Index database — for family historians researching ancestors in Kane County, Illinois. This database has grown into 1.2 million+ entries from over 350 indexed projects related to both public and private county-wide source records.



McHenry County Illinois Genealogical Society

The mission of the McHenry County Illinois Genealogical Society (MCIGS) is to foster an interest in genealogy, provide instruction in current research methods and practices, and support the preservation of and access to genealogical and historical records. They currently meet monthly at the McHenry County College. Guests are welcome. 


Fox Valley Genealogical Society

The Fox Valley Genealogical Society focuses on genealogical information in parts of four counties in Illinois: DuPage, Kane, Kendall, and Will. The primary townships they cover are Aurora (Kane), Naperville (DuPage), Lisle (DuPage), Downers Grove (DuPage), Oswego (Kendall), Wheatland (Will), DuPage (Will), and Lemont (Will).  They have nine monthly meetings throughout the year at the Naperville Public Library.



Elgin Genealogical Society

The Elgin Genealogical Society is based at the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin, Illinois. Its focus is to bring people together to promote genealogy, conduct programs which assist members with their own family history, encourage preservation of local records and make them accessible to everyone.


South Suburban Genealogical and Historical Society

The South Suburban Genealogical and Historical Society's prime area of interest are the 20 townships of southern Cook County and eastern Will County as well as the adjoining Chicago communities of Roseland, Pullman, and Kensington. Within this geographic area, this group provides a center where genealogists, beginning and advanced, can share their enthusiasm, growing knowledge, and family search problems and solutions. The SSGHS maintains a non-circulating reference and research library that is open to the public. The library is located in the Hazel Crest Public Safety Building. They host periodic meetings, sometimes in person, sometimes vie Zoom.
